Scarlet Ribbon

Let's study this song !

I peeped in to say good night
And I heard my child in pray
bring me some scarlet ribbons
Scarlet ribbons for my hair
All the stores were closed and shuttered
All the streets were dark and bare
In my town no scarlet ribbons
Not one ribbon for her hair
Through the night my heart was aching
Just before the dawn was breaking
I peeped in and on her bed
In gay profusion lying there
Lovely ribbons, scarlet ribbons
Scarlet ribbons for her hair
If I live to be a hundred
I shall never know from where
Came those lovely scarlet ribbons
Scarlet ribbons for her hair

Read the text and answer number 1 to 5!
Last summer, I went to London. I stayed in my friend’s house for few days.
One day, my friend, Michael and I took a walk in the centre of London. I wanted to try a tube to reach a place in London. A tube is a subway, or underground railway. Michael told me that many people lived in the city and worked in London. Commuters in London usually used the tube.
In the morning, Michael said, the commuters who wanted to travel by tube, had to queue for tickets at the ticket counter. However, they could buy the tickets in automatic ticket machines. Some people who regularly used the tube preferred season tickets. It cost less than paying separately each time they wanted to take the tube. After they have the ticket they show the ticket to the collector at the burrier. The commuters then stepped on to the descending escalator an in short time they were in the crowded platform waiting for the tube come in. during rush hour there was a tube to the city every a few minutes.
After the passengers arrived at their destination, he added, they were quickly out of the tube and went on to the escalator again. They walked away from the underground station and rushed to their offices. Through Michael’s explanation, now I know about the routine in London on weekdays. All people seemed very busy here.

My mother accompanied me to school on the first day. Other parents accompanied their children as well. We all waited in front of the school office.
Soon a teacher came and led us to some classrooms. There we were put into four separate classes. This was when some children began to cry as the parents were not allowed into the classrooms. I did not cry because I had been to kindergarten before. Actually my mother went home soon after for she knew I would be all right.
It was an enjoyable time for me as I got to know my new classmates. The teacher was very busy writing down our particulars so we had plenty of time to ourselves.

After recess we went back to out classroom and my new friends and I managed to coax two boys to stop crying. In fact, soon we were laughing and playing together. Once in a while the teacher had to tell us to keep quiet as we were making too much noise.

Prediksi Soal Ujian Nasional Bahasa Inggris Kelas IX SMP (edisi 1)

Read the text below and answer number 1 to 5.

When I was seven years old, I was given a small wallet to keep my pocket-money in. It made me feel grown up and I carried it proudly in my hip pocket.
One day, during recess in school, I discovered that my wallet was missing. I searched all my pockets but could not find it. There was some money in the wallet and without it I could not buy anything to eat. I was close to tears. It was not so much because of losing my precious wallet but because I might get a scolding from my parents. Anyhow I went hungry that day.
After recess I was in no mood to study at all. I kept thinking about how I lost my wallet and what my parents would do to me. How was I going to explain the loss? I did not know whether someone had taken it from my pocket or it had merely fallen out. I prayed that someone would find it and return it to me. My prayers came to nothing. Fortunately I did not have to pay to get on my school bus. My fare was paid monthly.
When I told my mother about my loss, she was clearly angry. I received a long lecture about my carelessness. When my father came home, I received another lecture. Also I was told that there would not be any more wallets for me until I got older.
So for the rest of the year and two years following, I kept my allowance in my pocket, without any wallet. I am glad to say I never lost any money again. I have learned to be more careful. It is not pleasant to lose something and then get scolded for losing it.

The Toraja are a native ethnic group of a mountainous region of South Sulawesi. Their population is approximately 650,000, of which 450,000 still live in the regency of Tana Toraja ("Land of Toraja"). Most of the people are Christians, and others are Moslems or believers of animism known as aluk ("the way").
The word toraja comes from the Bugis language meaning "people of the uplands". The Dutch colonial government named the people Toraja in 1909. Toraja funeral rites are important social events. They are usually attended by hundreds of people and take place for several days.
Before the 20th century, Torajans lived in autonomous villages, where they practised animism and were relatively untouched by the outside world. In the early 1900s, Dutch missionaries first worked to convert Torajan highlanders to Christianity. The Linow Lake is in Lahendong village, around 20 minutes drive south of Tomohon . This little lake on the west side of Mount Tompusu is so special. People say the water changes colors, depending on the direction and intensity of the sunlight that hits it. And it is true. Last December when I went there, one part of the lake was very green, another nearby was deep emerald, and right by that was a pale white stretch. But even more impressive is the fact that the lake seems to breathe!
Bubbles of gas, small and large, are constantly emerging from under the water, though there don’t seem to be any fish or other living creatures in it, and there’s quite a strong sulfur smell. Clearly there’s a lot of volcanic activity going on in this lake.

MEMAHAMI BENTUK SOAL UJIAN NASIONAL MATA PELAJARAN BAHASA INGGRIS

Oleh : Harsono, S.Pd
(Guru Bahasa Inggris SMP Negeri 05 Putri Hijau Bengkulu Utara)

Peraturan Menteri Pendidikan Nasional No. 78 tahun 2008 mengatur mengenai kisi-kisi soal Ujian Nasional SMP/MTs.

Ø What is the topic of the text/passage?
Ø What s the subject of the text/passage?
Ø The text/passage is about ….
Ø What is the best tittle for the text/passage?
Ø What is the text about?
Ø What does text tell us/you about?
Contoh:

STATE HISTORICAL MUSEUM
The State Histrorical Museum, which is located in 600 East Locus Des Moines Lowa serves as an exciting place when Iowans and other Visitors can experience the past.
The State Histrorical Museum has state of – the – art exhibits which allow visitors to explore the past in a way they never have experienced before. The interactive exhibits enable visitors to see, hear, and, even touch Iowa`s history.
Another of the building`s attraction is the library and archive, where genealogical and historical researchers uncover the past. The visitors may want to browse in the Museum Store and dine at the Café.
(Taken from Pendalaman Materi Sukses Ujian Nasional Bahasa Inggris)

What does the text tell us about?
a. Some exhibits
b. A museum
c. Iowans
d. A library

Ø What is the main idea of the text?
Ø What is the writer’s main point in the passage?
Ø The main idea of paragraph …

Contoh: Perhatikan teks STATE HISTORICAL MUSEUM di atas!

The main idea of paragraph one?
A. The State Historical Museum is an exciting place.
B. Visitors can experience the past.
C. Iowans love the museum.
D. The State Historical Museum has a lot of exhibits.

The State Histrorical Museum, which is located in 600 East Locus Des Moines Lowa serves as an exciting place when Iowans and other Visitors can experience the past.

Ø According to the passage/text ....
Ø It is stated in the text /passage….
Ø The passage/text indicates that ….
Ø The author mentions that ….
Ø Which of the following is true/false/not true?

Contoh: Perhatikan teks STATE HISTORICAL MUSEUM di atas!

Which of the following sentences is NOT TRUE based on the text?
A. The Stage Historical Museum is located in Iowa
B. The art – exhibits show the Iowa`s history
C. The visitors can browse in the Museum Store
D. Just Iowans visit the State Historical Museum

Ø From the text, we can learn that ….
Ø From the text, we may conclude that ….
Ø What is the moral value of the story ….
Ø Where do we usually find the warning?
Ø The announcement can be found in the following places, except…..

Contoh:
FOR PEDESTRIANS ONLY
Where can you find the sign above?
A. in the hotel
B. In the market
C. At the street
D. In the library

Ø The underlined word means ….
Ø What is the meaning of ….
Ø What is the synonym of ….
Ø What is the antonym of ….
Ø What does the sentence mean?
Contoh:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
MAY GOD ALWAYS BLESS YOU

LITA AND FAMILY

May God bless you.
The underlined word means ....
A. glorify
B. blame
C. admire
D. ignore

People need media in their daily life. One of these media is television, an electronic media, designed to receive information, news, and picture from far away directly. It presents news, information, and entertainment visually over the world at the same time directly.

What is the meaning of television?
A. A media of life.
B. An electronic media.
C. A media to get picture.
D. An entertainment.

Berdasarkan teks kita dapatkan makna kata televise yakni an electronic media. Maka jawaban yang tepat adalah B.

Soal yang menanyakan mengenai rujukan kata biasanya berbentuk:
Ø …..refers to…..
Ø What is the author’s purpose in this text/passage?
Contoh:

Lightning is a big electric spark. Sometimes it jumps between two clouds and the ground and sometimes between two clouds. The electric spark is hot. Its heat splits the air with a tremendous crack. When the spark has passed, the air tumbles together again. So with each flash of lightning it can be heard the crack or the rumble of thunder.
…….
“Its heat splits the air ….”(Paragraph one)
The underlined word refers to ….
A. the electric spark
B. the flash of light
C. the sound of thunder
D. the crack of thunder
Answer: A

My cousin has a 5-acre-durian orchard about five kilometers from town. I visited him once during a fruit season. I reached the orchard at about 9 o'clock in the morning after having cycled all the way from my house. My cousin was waiting for me in his ... (1) little wooden house in the middle of the orchard.

I was talking to my cousin when ... (2) a loud crash sounded from a distance. I was startled. However my cousin said that it was only a ripe durian dropping from a tree. Then I followed him to where the sound came ... (3). To my delight I found the fruit among the undergrowth. I picked it up and carried it back to the house.

So I spent the morning picking up fallen durians and eating the delicious fresh inside them. It
was a great time for me.
1. A. huge
B. modest
C. expensive
D. luxurious
2. A. happily
B. carefully
C. suddenly
D. gradually
3. A. up
B. in
C. out
D. from

Untuk soal nomor satu, perhatikan kalimat ini' My cousin was waiting for me in his ... (1) little wooden house in the middle of the orchard'.
Untuk soal nomor dua, cermatilah kalimat ini, 'I was talking to my cousin when ... (2) a loud crash sounded from a distance'.
Perhatikan kalimat ini, 'Then I followed him to where the sound came ... (3).'

Misalnya untuk teks naratif biasanya diawali dengan ‘once upon a time’, ‘one day’ atau ‘in the past’ setelah itu tentukan kalimat berikutnya yang tepat.

Contoh:
Arrange these sentences to make a good paragraph.
1. Secondly, see your doctor regularly for tests to check your cholesterol levels.
2. Today I will tell you how to reduce the risk of having a heart attack.
3. Firstly, be a non- smoker.
4. Finally, exercise regularly.
5. Thirdly, eat a low-fat diet and keep to a healthy weight.

A. 2-3-4-1-5
B. 3-1-5-4-2
C. 2-3-1-5-4
D. 3-1-4-2-5

Contoh:
off - show - communication - all - Turn - devices - the - during 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
A. 8 – 7 – 2 – 5 – 1 – 3 – 6 – 4
B. 8 – 7 – 4 – 2 – 3 – 6 – 5 – 1
C. 5 – 1 – 3 – 6 – 8 – 4 – 7 – 2
D. 5 – 1 – 4 – 3 – 6 – 8 – 7 – 2
Soal ini memiliki kata kunci 'turn', 'off, `communication', 'devices', 'during', dan 'show'.

Namun memendam semacam keperihan diam-diam.

Aku ajak engkau semua saudara-saudaraku,
sahabat-sahabatku untuk menarik napas sejenak
Duduk bersandar atau membaringkan badan
Kuajak engkau menjernihkan pikiran
Untuk menata hati
Menemukan kesalahan-kesalahan kita semua
Untuk tidak kita ulangi kembali
Sehingga kita bisa menemukan nilai kebenaran
Bahwa ukuran kebenaran adalah nilai bandingan

Wahai Pembimbing hidupku

Untuk mengkaji Ilmu-Mu (Al-Qur’an) semantap-mantapnya
Untuk mengkodifikasikanya melalui sholatulail
Untuk bisa hidup saling hormat, saling kasih, saling memenuhi harapan kemanusiaan sehingga mencapai tujuan akhir khasanah fi dunya khasanah fil akhirat
